Some Notes Regarding Organic Cotton
Organic clothing is made through careful processes to avoid including any
materials that can be attributed to the use of pesticides, herbicides, or
various other toxic chemicals. Currently, there is not a lot of regulation about
what a clothing manufacturer must do before labeling its clothing as being
organic clothing. So, just because clothing contains "organic" on the label
doesn't necessarily mean anything. It may still contains just as many chemical
components, or of contained these components at one time, as any other clothes
you see in the store. A "Made in China", "'Made in India", etc. label could very
well be an indicator that avoiding chemicals was not a priority, as there are
few organic production facilities in these areas.
The reason buying organic clothing is important to many people is that it
indicates that their purchases are not directly contributing to destruction of
the environment. Chemicals used in growth or manufacture of the materials
inevitably go back into the environment when the clothing is not organic. |
